Summer Skin Care: Finding the Right SPF for Makeup

Summer Skin Care: Finding the Right SPF for Makeup

Navigating the world of sunscreen options can be overwhelming. With so many choices available, finding the right SPF for your skin type, lifestyle, and location can feel like a daunting task. And for those who love wearing makeup, finding a sunscreen that not only protects but also works well under cosmetics adds another layer of complexity. As summer approaches, it's important to understand how to select the perfect SPF for your needs.

Current recommendations

As I’m currently in Cyprus for work, where the sun's intensity is a reminder to prioritize SPF, I've become more mindful of protecting my skin. It's a lesson that extends beyond location – sunscreen needs can vary with the seasons.

So to start off these are my current personal recommendations:

  • Beauty of Joseon - Relief Sun : Rice + Probiotics (SPF50+ PA++++) - I’ve been using this one for over 3 years now, and I have zero complaints. It’s lightweight. it absorbs quickly. And it works great under makeup. I have dry, sensitive skin, and I never get irritations from it. A 10 out of 10 really.

  • Avène Intense Protect 50+ Sun Cream for Very Sensitive Skin 150ml - This one is a great option for body care. It’s not sticky, and again, it’s great for sensitive skin. An added bonus is that it also absorbs quickly.

  • Neutrogena - Hydro Boost Water Gel Lotion SPF 50 - I like this one because it’s super moisturizing, and it’s not heavy at all. Also, pro tip: because of the gel consistency and the blue packaging it’s easy to get your husband to use it.

Under or Over Make-Up?

When I started using SPF daily, this was the first question I had. Should you wear your SPF under or over makeup?

The answer depends on personal preference and the type of sunscreen you're using. If you prefer a liquid or cream sunscreen, applying it under makeup is typically recommended.

On the other hand, if you're using a powder or spray sunscreen, applying it over makeup may be more convenient.

Ultimately, the most important thing is to ensure that you're reapplying sunscreen regularly, especially if you're spending extended periods of time outdoors.

Reapplying Sunscreen

Ensuring adequate sun protection doesn't end with the initial application of sunscreen. Throughout the day, especially during extended periods outdoors, it's crucial to reapply sunscreen regularly to maintain its effectiveness.

Here are some key points to keep in mind when it comes to reapplying sunscreen:

  1. Frequency: Aim to reapply sunscreen every two hours, or more frequently if you're swimming or sweating heavily.

  2. Coverage: Pay attention to areas that are often overlooked, such as the tops of ears, back of the neck, and tops of feet.

  3. Makeup with SPF: Consider using makeup products that contain SPF for added sun protection. While these products shouldn't replace traditional sunscreen, they can provide an extra layer of defense against UV rays.
